I feel so old.
But at the same time, our students will encounter old people (like me) who will answer the question, “What time is it?” with “The clock is right over there.”
I was talking to our school secretary, a gem of a human being, who said that she answered that question that way without even thinking about whether the student had been taught how to read the clock. At a certain age, we just assume people know.
Last year, I found out that half my class could not tell time on an analog clock. Just not high priority in many refugee camps, I guess…
So we are working on telling time to the hour and half-hour.
And it’s not always easy… So how do we do this practicing oral skills AND time skills? A great game called “I have/Who has?” You can find it here, at HaveFunTeaching.com. Such a great site, with lots of activities.
And then that’s only fun when there are two groups trying to get through the game fastest!
We had a great guest teacher there with us that day, too. Mr. Lurz. He has such a great, deep voice!
We want students to engage and to become independent learners. We have so many great teachers in our room. But we need the students to be more at the fore… We need them to be the leaders and the teachers.
So eventually, they can get out…
