The latest in acronyms

TESOL did a survey of members to find out what the latest jargon is.

I work in a jargon-laden job.

I teach ELLs that the government calls LEP students. I got my MA in TESOL. Many of the students I teach are SLIFE. Or SIFE, depending on where you live. I live in a WIDA state, and this month starts the annual ACCESS testing, as required by the former NCLB legislation. It gives us students’ ELD levels, which used to be ELP levels.

The list goes on and on.

It’s so confusing.

If you find yourself a little confused by the alphabet soup we ESL/ELL/EFL people live by, you can check TESOL’s list here.

And maybe I should start one of my own. Those of us who live in jargon tend to forget we’re using it. And for a profession built on making input comprehensible, that’s a little strange.
