We started sorting this week in class.

Sorting (categorizing) is such an important skill in school.

  • In writing, we use it when we create paragraphs, grouping like things together.
  • In science, we use it to determine whether our hypotheses are right. Is this like that or is it different?
  • In social studies, we look at events and compare and contrast, joining similar ideas together.
  • In math, we look for like terms.

We use sorting or categorizing in music (dissonant/harmonious sounds). In gym (equipment). In getting dressed in the morning (socks, shoes, gloves). In doing laundry (ditto). In cooking (think potatoes).

When do we not use it?

So it’s an important skill to learn. Last week, we started the process, first with shells, then graduating on to other things.

And this is only the beginning.

The tricky part is getting them to name the categories:

  • “I sorted by SIZE.”
  • “I sorted by SHAPE.”
  • “I sorted by COLOR.”

So many directions we can go with this. I wonder where our learning will take us next…
