This past week was the first for my students to play with a Flynn artist.
Susan Palmer came to observe me a few weeks ago, and I can tell that taking that prep time was well worth the effort.
She knows my kids! And she knows what to teach them.
So many times, people come in and try to do too much. Conversations we have are decidedly simple because my lovelies are still at the beginning stages of learning the language.
My class is all about learning to be brave and have a voice. When we learn another language, particularly if we are adults (or even almost adults), it’s hard to make that leap to live in that different world.
I remember when I first lived in Germany, it was hard to hear my voice with such harsh sounds. I didn’t hear myself as the intelligent, confident human I knew myself to be. I had to get used to expressing my needs, my wants and my opinions in another language and feel good about doing it. It’s far too easy to sit back and let others talk. It’s why we have older populations that move in and do not learn the language. It’s a hard thing to do as an adult.
You have to take risks, personally and publicly.
And Susan got them to do just that. There was pretty immediate buy-in. And that’s amazing.
I hope you enjoy the video I’ve put together. I know my students had fun learning last Monday. And we get to do it all again this next week!
Partial funding came through to support this project, but we’re still looking for more. If you know somebody looking to give away some cash…
